CROCHET BASICS & BEYOND CLASS Four 2-hour Sessions Cost: $160 (yarns to be purchased separately, patterns included) Dates & Times Session 1: Thursday, September 18/25 from 1:00 - 3:00 pm Session 2: Thursday, September 25/25 from 1:00 - 3:00 pm Session 3: Thursday, October 2/25 from 1:00 - 3:00 pm Session 4: Thursday, October 9/25 from 1:00 - 3:00 pm Teacher: Cheryl
Join Cheryl with her enthusiastic approach and love of crocheting to learn a new skill! This progressive four session class will start with the basics and advance your crochet skills in each of the following sessions.
Session 1: Intro to Crocheting Learn the basic foundation stitches of crochet, including how to chain, single crochet, and double crochet. Cheryl will talk about tension, choice of yarns, and hook sizes while you practice, hands on, these basic stitches creating a stitch sampler in class to keep for reference.
Session 2: Dishcloth Scrubby Students will learn/review and put into practice the basic crochet skills of chaining and single crochet while creating a useful dishcloth scrubby. Attention will be given to how to keep the project square (a skill that is ever important in almost all crochet projects) and participants will learn to add a second yarn, intarsia style. Borders are crocheted with a single yarn while the middle of the cloth is made with two yarns held together. This gives the middle the “scrubby” effect!
Session 3: Baby Hat This is a great skill building class, as you will learn how to take ‘flat crochet’ stitches and discover how to work them in the round. Cheryl will also be teaching how to measure your gauge, how to join in the round and increase in the round. And as this is a top down pattern, it starts with the great Magic Loop technique, which Cheryl will easily guide you through.
This is a quick project to make up, so students can anticipate completing the project in class. And once you learn these basic skills, you can proceed with any of the variations that the pattern offers, including earflaps, all over flowers, multiple colours or even make the matching Adult version!
Session 4: Granny Square In this ‘next steps’ class, beginner Crocheters with a knowledge of crochet basics, will learn how to make a granny square. It's a small but mighty project that can be used to make blankets, stuffies, bags, shawls and yes, even garments!
Students will learn how to read and identify basic crochet symbols, how to read a crochet chart/schematic, how to change colours and create a colourful granny square using at least 3 different colours. Stitches taught and used in this class will include a basic chain, double crochet and slip stitches.

Please join Judy & Cheryl to learn all of the techniques needed to knit a pair of these fabulous mittens! Feel free to enjoy wearing them yourself or gift them to someone special.
As shown in the photo below, these mittens consist of 2 layers; the outside of the mitten (left) is knit using a single strand of fingering weight yarn and the extra cozy, warm inside layer (right) is knit holding a strand of fingering weight yarn along with a strand of lace weight mohair.
Students will learn a special type of cast on, a Provisional Cast-On where your stitches remain “live” so that you can collect them later to knit in the other direction without a seam! After choosing and knitting your style of cuff from the 3 options, you will then learn to knit a beautifully shaped gusset for the thumb that fits the natural shape of our palm. Talk about comfortable! The body of the mitten will then be worked and topped off with your choice of finishes for the tip of the mitten. With the inner layer complete, students will then be guided on collecting the live stitches (that have been waiting for you), from that special cast on edge, so you can seamlessly work the outer layer of your mitten! Ingenious!
